This was a place where people came to camp and hunt, and in particular catch turtles at certain times of the year.

Harry Nannup recalls that;

There used to be about six places where people would camp. One camp was where the drain finishes, another where the water tower is, just behind it. We used to walk up an old bush track along the footy oval. Billy Dower Rd was a main walking track. We used to camp near Turtle Swamp and in hard times lived off the swamp turtle, turtle meat, duck eggs and gilgies, all formed part of our diet. It used to be all clear water here, but it’s all salted up now.
